課程概述

Quantitative traits – be they morphological, physiological, or developmental – show considerable variation within or among populations of a given organism. Most economically important traits in crops are quantitative. Indeed, quantitative genetics provides a theoretical basis for plant breeding. Modern quantitative genetics integrates knowledge from population genetics, statistical theories, mathematical modeling, genetics, and genomics, which is what we will go through in this 3-credit course. 

課程目標
At the end of the course, the students are expected to have gained an understanding of fundamental concepts of population and quantitative genetics, explored how quantitative genetics principles can help a plant breeder in a breeding program, and appreciated the theory and experimental approaches which form the basis of breeding strategies. We aim to help students progress towards the acquisition of a critical self-learning ability, the ability that every plant breeder and society player needs. 
課程要求
本課程所需的基礎知識除遺傳學及作物育種學外,尚需生物統計的基本知識(包括生物統計與試驗設計),部份課程需要用到迴歸分析與複因子試驗設計的初步概念。
必要先修課程包括:遺傳學、統計學、試驗設計;
建議先修或同時修習課程:農藝學統計法,高等統計學;
建議接續課程:分子育種學、育種試驗資料分析、育種學研究法、高等作物育種學、基因體統計方法導論
